The decluttering diaries

This week my highlight has been helping a fantastic client to declutter her bedroom.
It’s so easy to let bedrooms get cluttered with things. It can be a dumping ground for clothes, bags, letters and random bits and bobs. Not to mention the chair of doom (you know that chair which collects clothes) and the floordrobe ( the limbo for yesterday’s pants).
Our bedrooms are the last thing we see at night and the first thing we see in the morning. At the times we need to be most relaxed (night) and motivated (morning) we are surrounded by clutter.
It makes such a difference to our mindset when we wake up to a clear bedroom, and an organised wardrobe (see blog here)
I’ve definitely not been able to see my bedroom floor in the past! I know that unless we have a system, the easy option will win every time because we’re tired and overwhelmed.
So I have a few rules that I stick to (mainly!).
Firstly, declutter, declutter, declutter!
Start with the floor. Not only will this make it easier to walk around, it will also motivate you when you see the difference. Set aside any clothes to sort when decluttering your wardrobe (see blog here).
Put things in categories: letters, magazines, electronics, beauty products.
Go through each category and decide what to keep, recycle, bin or give to charity.
Decide what you want to keep in your bedroom. For example, clothes, beauty products, journal, bedside books. Make a mental note that anything which doesn’t fit into those categories, will not set foot in the bedroom! Rehome anything else in other areas of your home.
Make a decision that every time you take your clothes off, you’ll put them in the laundry basket, hang them up or put them in your drawers. It helps if you lose the chair of doom so you don’t have the tempting option!
Make your room into a relaxing haven. Add candles, a cosy bed spread and small lamps to give you a warm glow.
You will love settling down in your calm and inviting space, or waking up in a clear and organised bedroom. It really will change how you feel and feed into your day, giving you a sense of clarity and control.
