A clear, tidy hallway is essential to keeping the house functioning well. Many halls are filled with piles of coats hanging precariously from pegs, bags on the floor, an overflowing shoe rack and piles of post.
This makes it difficult to find what you’re looking for (without ending up with a pile of coats on your head). It also means that leaving your house is stressful and not a welcome sight to come home to.
Imagine coming back to a tidy and organised hallway, where everything has it’s place.
You feel calm and on top of things, everything is where it should be.
Follow my 3 step plan to create your ideal space.
1. Seasonal organisation.
This is a great way to scale down the amount you have hanging up.
· In summer, you don’t need bulky coats by the door. Put them into storage and create space for your lighter jackets to be easily accessible.
· In winter, put light jackets into storage so you only have one winter jacket per peg.
· Any coats or items you won’t be using regularly, put into storage in clear plastic boxes with labels. They will be easily accessible when needed and your pegs will be clear.
2. Declutter your miscellaneous items.
A solitary glove, old scarf and random bags, are taking up valuable space. You’ll be amazed at how many items have been unused for years.
· Have specific storage for each activity or use. For example, you could have a box for winter items such as scarves, hats and gloves, a box for bike related things like helmets and an area for your work bag.
· Sort out your shoe rack: You don’t need your hiking boots to be by the door as you don’t use them every day. The same goes for wellingtons, going out shoes and trainers you don’t use regularly.
Store them elsewhere and use the rack for every day shoes to reduce the clutter.
3. Deal immediately with post.
Have a method for dealing with post. If it’s piling up and hasn’t been dealt with, it will cause clutter and impact your life.
Do these three steps:
1. As soon as you pick up the mail, sort out the junk mail and put it into the recycling
2. Open all letters immediately- this will ensure you are aware of any action to take.
File bills, statements, invoices in a filing system. If action needs to be taken, put them into an in tray to deal with when you do your admin.
3. Add any appointments to your diary and put the letters on your notice board.
This way you are preventing a pile up in the hall and in your life!
Lastly, enjoy your hallway. Make it a welcoming place so that you want to keep it tidy.
Leaving the house and coming back home can be enjoyable when you create a clear, organised space.
