Before you get out the marigolds, read my blog on why decluttering should be your priority.

Spring is here (ish!) and it’s time for clearing away the cobwebs and letting go of things anchoring you to the past.
Deep cleaning is synonymous with spring for good reasons. Most cultures traditionally use this time to clear out their homes after a long winter. It makes a huge difference to our surroundings, leaving them cleansed and refreshed.
But before you even think of cleaning, think about this:
The more stuff you own, the more cleaning you have to do!
It’s obvious but true. When we own less things, it’s quicker and easier to clean your home, not just in the spring but on a weekly basis.
Start your own spring ritual by decluttering first.
When you declutter, you open the door to new beginnings, new growth and new opportunities.
Letting go of things that no longer serve you, helps you to see the abundance you already have. It brings clarity, a sense of order and restored purpose- it helps you to reconnect with your values and sense of self.

Spring is a great time to declutter because:
We have spring energy to motivate us.
The days are longer and we have more light.
It’s a natural transition both physically and mentally.
In practical terms;
When you declutter your living room, you have a lot less to dust.
When you organise your wardrobe, clothes won’t get thrown on the floor.
When you sort out your hall, you’ll come home to a welcoming space and not a jumble sale!
So how do we begin to declutter when there is so much we could do?
Firstly, don’t get over enthusiastic and decide to take on the whole garage or the box room/dumping ground. You will inevitably become deflated after you’ve got everything out and realise it’s going to take days!
Start with something small; a shelf, a kitchen draw, a bathroom cabinet, or a hallway cupboard,
Lay out your labelled bags for rubbish, recycle and donate.
Set a timer for 15 mins.
Put some motivating music on.
Go, go, go! See how much you can get done in the time. If you feel motivated when you see the results, set another timer for 15 mins and repeat.

If you are not sure what to do with an item, ask yourself these questions:
Have I worn or used this in the last year? (If not pass it on, you’re not going to).
Is it in good enough condition for me to wear/ use? (Be honest!)
How many of this item do I already own and do I need another one?
If I let this go and need one in the future, what’s the financial implication?
If I donate these items, what’s the worst that can happen?
We often need to go through these thought processes in order to come to a considered conclusion.
On the other hand, feeling our way in to the decision making process is as important.
Ask yourself:
How do I feel when I hold this item?
Positive, joyful, like myself, or
Bored, deflated or not bothered?
Our bodies give us valuable insights in to the items we value, and the things it’s time to say goodbye to.

Once you have begun decluttering, the motivation will come to keep going.
When you’re deciding what to do next, ask yourself, which place will have the biggest impact when decluttered and organised?
Decluttering is not about following rigid methods, it’s about finding the areas that are important to you and working to a time frame you can manage.
When you’ve finished decluttering an area, now is the time to spring clean before rehoming your (down sized!) belongings.
It will make a big impact on your mood, when you see the difference your effort has made. You’ll feel a sense of achievement and be able to enjoy the refreshed and organised spaces you have created.
So before spring cleaning, spring declutter and revitalise yourself and your home.
