If you’re not sure where to start with decluttering, a kitchen draw is a good place.
It can be done in 15 mins and the satisfaction will spur you on to do more.
Step 1- Preparation
Decide on a draw- yes the one full of miscellaneous rubbish, takeaway menus from the 90’s and random appliance parts!
Create a space on the floor to use as a sorting area.
Put down 3 bags: charity, recycling, bin.
Start a timer for 15 mins.
Step 2- Sort it
Take all items out of the draw and put them in your sorting space.
Quickly sort through and put them in the relevant bags.
Use this criteria to help you:
Have I used this in the last 6 months? If not, it's probably good to go.
Does it still work? (If you want to get it repaired, make a time asap).
How many do I need? If you have duplicate items, choose the one that works the best. If you have 15 bags, scale it down to a reasonable amount that’s easy to store.
Do I know what this is/ does? Parts of equipment, odd plastic bits etc.. If you have no idea, it’s unlikely you’re going to use it!
Step 3- Organise
Give the draw a good clean.
Put the items you’re keeping back in the draw. Utilise the space so it’s easy to maintain. For example, put all takeaway menus in a wallet, all bags into one bag and any items you use frequently, at the front of the draw.
Step 4- Admire your handy work.
Start small and get the momentum going. Once you’ve done one draw, you’ll want to do more.
