Zapping clutter hotspots

Everyone has clutter hotspots even if you regularly declutter (mine is on top of a heater!) Annoying and with a life of their own, they band together in groups and cause chaos!

You can deal with them - with a little thought and regular action you can ensure they are minimal and dealt with quickly

Here are 5 ways you can get on track- may the force be with you!

  1. Decide on one pile to start with.

  2. Set out bags for: bin, recycle, charity.

  3. Set a timer for 15 mins

  4. Go through the items as quickly as you can!

2. Paper work is a big clutter maker. Create a habit of recycling junk mail and throw away envelopes immediately. Collect paper work to deal with in a nice folder or container.

Put it somewhere that’s easy for you to access- for example by the sofa.

When you have a glass of wine you can go through the pile!

3. Identify your hotspots! Where are the places things collect and what is collecting in each area?

Make it as easy as possible to keep the clutter contained in each problem area.

Buy a newspaper rack for the living room, storage baskets to keep similar objects together, a bin you can put at arms reach, a box file to keep papers together and not scattered over the table.

4. Keep a storage basket or other container for each persons stuff.

For example in the living room, this will keep the piles from spreading.

It won’t stop the build up of clutter, but you will see when your container is full and needs dealing with. Oh and it will help your sanity!

5. Once a week, put some music on, gather all the clutter from your hotspots and give yourself 20 mins to put things where they belong or into the bin/recycling.

I hope this helps and gives you the impetus to get going- make it short and sweet!
